Leadership in Sports Level 2
Course Description

Leadership in Sports is a two year course at Level Three. A unit standard based course run with the help of Manukau Institute of Technology that prepares the students as athletes, sport trainers, outdoors instructors, team dynamics, fitness dynamics, nutrition and general health and well being. The course is both theory based and practical and is designed to cater for students who do enjoy the practical components of physical education, want to get better at a chosen sport and gain an understanding of how the body works. Students with a love of the outdoors, students who want to gain communication skills, leadership skills and become better in their day to day physical well being will excel in this course.
Course Outline
This is a unit standards course and does not contribute towards University Entrance. It is a mix of practical demonstration of physical performance, leadership through coaching and event running of an event. There is also a theoretical component where you are required to demonstrate your knowledge and reflection of aspects of sports leadership.
This is a two year course where different Level 3 credits will be offered each year.
Where will Leadership in Sport lead me?
The skills developed in Leadership in Sport will be useful for all students and especially those who are interested in careers such as coaching, sports psychology, personal training, sports marketing and management, teaching, sports medicine, sports science, performance analysis, police, physiotherapy, outdoor instructing and much more…
Assessment
Leadership in Sport is 100% internally assessed, this means that you will need to work hard throughout the whole year. Some aspects of assessment will be conducted as in-class tests.

Course Overview
Term 1
Conduct and review a beginner level coaching session.
Term 2
Sports Injuries – Demonstrate knowledge of injuries, prevention and risks and hazards associated with sport or recreation.
Term 3
Demonstrate exercise and stretching techniques
Demonstrate quality of physical performance in an applied setting.
Term 4
Event Management - Plan and run a recreation activity
Recommended Prior Learning
Open Entry, however, strong literacy skills, Level 1 Science, high self-management, genuine interest in Physical Activity demonstrated through positive involvement in Physical Education classes and at the discretion of the HOD.
Students are required to play sport for a Liston College team or team outside of the college if it is not offered at school.
