General Science Level 1

L1GSC
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs K. Jom

The course of study continues from the general science taught in Year 10. It provides an intensive general basis for the study of physics, biology, and chemistry at senior level. The course also provides an increased awareness of the relevance of science in everyday life.

Topics covered are: Genetics and inheritance, mechanics, force and motion, acids, bases and their reactions and practical investigations in physics and chemistry.

Course Overview

Term 1
AS 90948 Demonstrate understanding of biological ideas relating to genetic variation.
The study of this standard involves linking biological ideas about genetic variation. It may involve explaining, elaborating, applying, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing.

AS90944 Acids and Bases
The study of this standard involves linking aspects of acids and bases. It may involve explaining, elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing. This may require the use of chemistry vocabulary, symbols and conventions (including names and formulae), and writing balanced symbol equations.

Term 2
AS 90947 Investigate selected chemical reactions
The study of this standard involves explaining, elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing the links between the classification of reactions, observations and equations, and the formation of precipitates and solubility rules. This requires explanations that use chemistry vocabulary, symbols and conventions (including names and formulae), including writing balanced symbol equations.

AS 90940 Demonstrate understanding of aspects of mechanics
The study of this standard involves providing evidence that shows how or why phenomena, concepts, and
principles are connected in the context of given situations. Statements must demonstrate an understanding of connections between concepts.

Term 3
AS 90935 Practical physics investigations
This investigation is an activity that includes collecting, processing and interpreting data. The investigation must lead to a linear mathematical relationship.

Term 4
Revision to prepare for external examinations.
