Physical Science Level 1

L1PSC
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs K. Jom

Recommended Prior Learning

Open Entry, however, it is recommended that you would have achieved mostly 'Merit' or 'Excellence' in Year 10 Science, English and Maths.

Helpful Accompanying Subjects:
• Mathematics
• Geography
• English

This course aims to develop students' investigative skills and helps them to appreciate the nature of Physics and Chemistry and its relevance to every-day life and people. Through practical experience wherever possible, the student is encouraged to develop the necessary practical skills to handle and manipulate equipment safely and to make, record and process chemical and physical observations.

Students will choose a mixture of 5-6 Science, Chemistry and/or Physics standards. The course prepares students for the Year 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology courses.

Course Overview

Term 1
AS 90944 Acids and Bases
The study of this standard involves linking aspects of acids and bases. It may involve explaining, elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing. This may require the use of chemistry vocabulary, symbols and conventions (including names and formulae), and writing balanced symbol equations.

AS 90947 Investigate selected chemical reactions
The study of this standard involves explaining, elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing the links between the classification of reactions, observations and equations, and the formation of precipitates and solubility rules. This requires explanations that use chemistry vocabulary, symbols and conventions (including names and formulae), including writing balanced symbol equations.

Term 2
AS 90932 Demonstrate understanding the aspects of carbon chemistry
The study of this standard involves linking aspects of carbon chemistry when explaining, elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing. This may require the use of chemistry vocabulary, symbols and conventions (including names and formulae) and writing balanced symbol equations.

AS90940 Demonstrate understanding of aspects of mechanics
The study of this standard involves providing evidence that shows how or why phenomena, concepts, and
principles are connected in the context of given situations. Statements must demonstrate an understanding of connections between concepts.

AS90935 Practical physics investigations
This investigation is an activity that includes collecting, processing and interpreting data. The investigation must lead to a linear mathematical relationship.

Term 3
AS90937 Demonstrate understanding of electricity and magnetism involves providing evidence that shows how or why phenomena, concepts, or principles are connected in the context of given situations. Statements must
demonstrate an understanding of connections between concepts.

Term 4
Revision to prepare for external examinations.
