Recommended Prior Learning

Students for this course will be identified by the Head of Department with consultation from Year 10 teachers and parents / caregivers.


Level 1 Numeracy (L1NUM) is a course designed for students to develop the basic Mathematics skills required for tasks both at home and in the workplace, as well as to obtain the numeracy requirements for Level 1 NCEA.

Made up of unit standards only, the topics in this course focus on Number, Geometry and Statistics. Successful completion of this course will enable students to obtain the 10 Numeracy credits required to pass NCEA Level 1.

The course is recommended for students who would find the level of work in the L1MAT course too demanding. Students are identified by the Head of Department in consultation with classroom teachers and parents / caregivers.

Students who take this course cannot progress directly into Level 2 Mathematics courses.


Course Overview

Term 1
Number

Students who successfully complete this unit standard will be able to use number skills to solve problems. They will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers, using their knowledge of fractions, percentages, decimals, integers, place value, number facts, and number sequencing.

Term 2
Measurement

Students who successfully complete this unit standard will be able to use measurement skills to solve problems. They will be able to undertake measurements such as length and capacity, calculate area and volume, and interpret location and direction, using their knowledge of the metric system, conversions, and estimation.

Term 3
Statistics

Students who successfully complete this unit standard will be able to interpret statistical information for a purpose. They will be able to identify the features of a data set and draw reasonable conclusions based on provided material.
